Sweet Saturday: Blueberry Ice Cream

Sweet Saturday: Blueberry Ice Cream

One of my favorite summer memories as a child was eating my Grandma and Grandpa Scott’s homemade ice cream. My grandma would work in the kitchen to get the ice cream made, then give it to my grandfather to crank on his ice cream maker. We would sit around and patiently wait for the ice cream. Grandpa would tell stories as we all laughed. Soon after, the ice cream would be spooned into bowls. We would all eat it a bit too fast and end up groaning with ice cream headaches, but we didn’t mind. There is nothing quite like

Zucchini Bread

If you buy the products, I receive a commission on the sale.   Mid-summer. A time of miserable heat and humidity, and vegetables ripe enough to pick from the garden. While our temperatures have been unusually mild, our garden has grown plenty of tomatoes and zucchini ready to pick. The challenge has been how to use all this extra produce. Earlier this week, I made a fresh tomato sauce and

From Sour to Sweet

This week has been a challenge. In. So. Many. Ways.  At the end of last week, I developed an itch on one of my legs; an itch that wouldn’t go away. In fact, it got worse and spread to my other leg. I couldn’t imagine what it was. I started to panic and think we might have bed bugs. Of course, my husband having no such rashes or problems meant that couldn’t be it. (Why bed bugs went through my mind, I have no idea.) Later I theorized it must be gnats eating me alive. Wrong again. Finally, after dealing with

Sweet Saturday: Lemon Sugar Cookies

When my husband and I were dating, we talked a lot about cooking. We both enjoyed it; him more than me, to be honest. While I liked to cook, I never found cooking for one to be fun. I found it frustrating. My husband, on the other hand, liked trying out new recipes despite only cooking for himself. He enjoyed cooking so much that he subscribed to Taste of Home magazine.  Before I met him, I had never heard of that magazine. It was an eye-opener. Lots of recipes submitted by readers nationwide. Now, five years later, we still subscribe to

Sweet Saturday: Blueberry Cobbler

My least favorite season is summer. I hate it. The heat is too overwhelming; however, the one thing I do like about it is all the fresh fruit. While I’m not a fan of vegetables, I adore fruit. Berries, in particular, are my favorites.  Growing up, I looked forward to summer just to eat my Grandma Davis’s blackberry cobbler. It was made from the fresh blackberries grown on her farm. Blackberries that I sometimes got to help pick. While I no longer have access to the fresh blackberries, I still make the cobbler every year, at least once. (I would

Sweet Saturday: Strawberry Tart

As I mentioned once, I am not a fan of chocolate; however, I am a lover of strawberries! Strawberries have been my favorite food since I was a little girl. They are luscious and delicious. Perfect on their own or sugared and poured over pound cake.  When I was pregnant with my youngest, Grace, I couldn’t get enough strawberries. I bought 2 pints of strawberries a week for most of the summer. I ate most of those strawberries all by myself. (Hmmm…maybe this is why she has red hair??)  That said, I’ve never been daring with strawberries. I stick to

Sweet Saturday: Lemon Blueberry Muffins

One of my favorite restaurants is Perkins. Any time I go there, I get the breakfast and always get it with a blueberry muffin. Blueberry muffins were one of the first things I baked from scratch when I lived on my own. They make me smile every time I take a bite. I also adore lemon, as I mentioned before with the lemon squares I made a couple of months ago. Not long ago, it occurred to me that I should combine the flavors for a lemon blueberry muffin. I played with a recipe I had for blueberry muffin making

Sweet Saturday: Caramel Apple Pie

I grew up spoiled. Both of my grandmas could make the best desserts, especially my Grandma Scott. It was this grandma that taught my mom how to cook and bake. While my mom did a great job baking my grandma’s creations, no one could quite measure up to my grandma’s natural skill level. It was always a treat visiting my grandma and being served one of her fabulous pies.  My favorite pie that she made was her pecan pie, but a close second was her apple pie. It is amazing. I had to be taught how to make it

Sweet Saturday: Cinnamon Crescent Rolls

Why are crescent rolls so melt-in-your-mouth delicious? I’ve had a love affair with crescent rolls since I was a little girl. My daughters have already fallen in love with them. To me, the crescent roll was always just an accompaniment to dinner. I would lather on some butter, even though it wasn’t really needed. I never imagined that a crescent roll would be the basis for the perfect sweet treat. It wasn’t until Pinterest that I saw all the possibilities for the lovely crescent roll beyond bread for dinner. I dared to do something new with them when I made

Sweet Saturday: Blackberry Bread

One of my all-time favorite foods is the blackberry! The flavor is sweet and wonderful. The plump, dark purple berries hold an allure other berries lack, save the strawberry.  The thought of blackberries brings me back to summers visiting my grandparents’ farm and helping to pick the berries. The best part of picking them was sampling about a third of what I actually collected. Then, my Grandma Davis would make her blackberry cobbler. A sweet treat indeed!  I love these berries enough that I planted a blackberry bush in my yard about 3 or 4 years ago. This past summer
