Have I ever mentioned how much I hate summer weather? I’m sure I have. Thank goodness for Willis Carrier, who invented air-conditioning in 1902. He was a brilliant man who helped make summer more bearable.
Granted, this does not mean I can get out of spending time outside. With three little girls, spending most of my summer outside is a requirement, what with swim lessons, soccer, and playing at the park. When I do get a chance to cool off (in my air-conditioned house) and my girls go to bed, I enjoy kicking back and watching a favorite TV program or streaming a favorite movie or show on Netflix.
Since it is summer, I thought I would share with you 10 awesome summer movies to watch. All of these summer-themed movies are currently on Netflix. Bonus!
The Endless Summer (1966)
This classic documentary film follows two young surfers determined to catch the perfect wave.
Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
This ode to summer camp films of the 1970s and 1980s is a new classic. It’s campy (pun intended), outrageous, and funny.
After her son drops out of college, Jackie follows him to California where he’s determined to surf.
Major League (1989)
The owner of the Cleveland Indians wants to move the team so she fills her line up with some of the worst baseball players. Or, are they the worst?
My Girl (1991)
The story of a mortician’s daughter, Vada, and the friendship she develops with Thomas during the summer.
The Sharknado Trilogy
I’m not sure if these take place during the summer, but it fits in with summer perfectly. It’s like Jaws but everywhere but the ocean. These movies don’t take themselves seriously and will leave you laughing. Keep your eyes open for interesting cameos.
My Father, My Hero (1994)
Trying to impress a boy while on vacation in the Bahamas, teenager Nicole pretends that her dad is her boyfriend.
The Sandlot (1993)
It’s the summer of 1962, and nothing brings the kids in the neighborhood quite like baseball and adventures.
To Catch a Thief (1955)
Summer. The Riviera. A series of thefts. This classic Alfred Hitchcock movie is romantic, intriguing, and humorous with marvelous performances by Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.
The Seven Year Itch (1955)
After Richard sends his family to Maine for the summer, he sets his eyes on his curvaceous neighbor (Marilyn Monroe).
Something’s Gotta Give (2003)
I’m not sure if this is summer, but it does take place at a beach. That counts, right? Anyhow, in this romantic comedy, a wealthy older music mogul who loves younger women meets Erica (his younger date’s mother) and discovers love with someone closer to his age.
These are just the summer-themed movies you can find on Netflix. There are a lot more out there that I love, including Independence Day and National Lampoon’s Vacation. What are some summer movies you love?
