I Want to Be a Superhero

I Want to Be a Superhero

Disclosure: I’m a member of the Netflix #StreamTeam which means that they pay for the streaming service in exchange for me posting once a month about the service. All opinions are my own.

“Wonder Woman!!!” I shouted at the top of my lungs and spun, imagining that I was turning into her so I could save the day. Naturally, my other friends wanted to turn into Wonder Woman, too. No one fought over it, we all spun in unison. It was a game played daily as a child in the 1970s. Although, at times we pretended to be Isis, Jamie from The Bionic Woman, or one of Charlie’s Angels

I Want to Be a SuperheroFor some reason, as the 1970s faded away, so did superhero TV shows. There were a few superhero movies, but not one featured a female as a hero. And for a long time, female superheroes were almost nonexistent, with the exceptions of a few characters in the X-Men and one or two in Marvel movies. Until now, that is.

This summer, I’ve gone to the movies twice to see Wonder Woman. After seeing it the first time, I felt an overwhelming emotion. Not only did it feature a woman kicking some serious ass (yeah, I had to say it), the movie also didn’t treat her as a sex object, a rare thing for women in movies as it is. When I saw it a second time, I decided I wanted to be Wonder Woman. I felt as I did as a child after watching Lynda Carter on the TV show.

I love watching superhero movies and enjoy some shows, too. While I can’t afford to go see the movie Wonder Woman every day at the movies, I can watch other shows. And, there are now a lot more shows for my girls to watch than I even had in the 1970s. Granted, there are only a couple that feature strong superhero girls or women, but I know that will change. But it’s a start.

In the meantime, I’ll keep watching superhero movies, living vicariously through the characters since achieving my childhood fantasy of being a superhero will not happen.

If you want to be a superhero like me, here is my list of some shows and movies you and your kids can watch this month on Netflix. Oh, and if they feature strong women, I’ll mark the title with a (*).

I Want to Be a Superhero

My personal favorites are Miraculous Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir, The Flash, Sky High, and Supergirl.

I have to admit that my favorite on this list is the least “superhero-y” movie on the list, Jessica JonesSome others I like are Captain America: Civil War, V For Vendetta, Gotham, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Arrow, and Catwoman. I also have Alphas, The Tomorrow People, Doctor Strange, and Luke Cage on my “too watch” list.

Now, out of curiosity, what superhero movies or TV shows do you wish you could stream on Netflix? Let me know in the comments!
