Sweet Saturday: Peanut Brittle

Since Thanksgiving came to an end, I’ve been busy planning what Christmas cookies and candies I will make this year. I love trying new recipes, but there is something about making what you grew up eating. When I was a child, my mom spent a lot of time in the kitchen before Christmas. Every year she would make my favorites: oatmeal raisin cookies, sugar cut out cookies, ice box cookies, divinity, and, of course, peanut brittle. To me, Christmas is not the same without at least one of those.  Now that I’m a mom, I want to bake and make

My Favorite Things Party

Thanksgiving is over, and the Christmas season is in full swing. I love Christmas! The music. The lights. All the beautiful trees and decorations. The cookies and sweets. And, of course, I love the gifts, giving as well as receiving.  Recently, my MOMs Club celebrated Christmas together as part of a Moms’ Night Out event (in other words, no kids). We all met up at another member’s home, each bringing something to eat. I intended to bring my lemon squares, but after a rough morning with my girls, the last thing I wanted to do that afternoon was bake. Instead,

“Meet Me on Monday”

Another blogger I follow, Mouthy Barber Mom, started playing a question game today. I liked the idea so much that I decided to do it myself. If you are a blogger too, try it as well. 😉 Here we go. Questions:   1.  Wrapping paper or gift bags? I’m starting to become a huge lover of gift bags! But, I still like wrapping gifts in paper (provided I have the time) with beautiful bows. 2.  Real or artificial tree? Artificial. I lived in apartments for years that didn’t allow live trees due to the fire hazard. Besides, I’m very allergic to

Christmas Cookies

Do you ever get the feeling that someone else has taken over in your body?  I had that recently. Every Christmas until I met Chris, with one exception, I have not baked a thing for Christmas. Not really. It wasn’t that I didn’t love cookies or candy, but I just didn’t see the need in baking lots of cookies when I would be the only one eating them. After Chris and I got married, I did end up making Oatmeal Raisin cookies at Christmas time. Why? I’m not quite sure since again I would be the only one eating the

My Florida Vacation

Ginny checking me out while on the road. Boy, oh boy! The last 11 days have been quite busy.  A week ago, on Monday, Chris, Ginny, and I left on a road trip to see my family in Florida.  It took us two days worth of driving to get there. Along the way, we even stopped and had breakfast with a college friend of mine. We were glad when we finally arrived so we could relax and enjoy visiting with family. My parents have visited us 3 times since Ginny was born in April.  However, Ginny is now at the age where she isn’t

Trimming the Tree

Every year, on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, my husband and I trim the tree and put up all of our Christmas decorations. We both love Christmas and want to get things up. Now, I hear some of my more conservative Catholic friends muttering to themselves that I shouldn’t have put up decorations now. That I should wait until Advent is over before getting ready for Christmas.  To them I would reply that putting up decorations is part of my preparation for Christmas, and isn’t that what Advent is about? Preparing for Christmas?  It doesn’t mean I don’t celebrate Advent and

How Many Coats are Too Many for Ginny?

As the holiday season fast approaches, I realize that Ginny will soon be meeting Santa Claus for the first time. I’m not quite sure how that meeting will go, although I’m quite sure it will be eventful. This morning as I was thinking about her first meeting with Santa, I also realized that she has no outfit to meet Santa in yet.  So, after Chris was awake and we had lunch, I ventured over to Just Kids, a consignment shop in my town.  I hoped to find a bargain and something I liked. I found a lot of outfits I

All I Want for Christmas….

It is that time again. It is time for me to once again make a Christmas list. When I was a kid, I loved putting together my list.  I would pull out the JcPenney Christmas Catalog and go through page by page writing down what I wanted that year.  Not once did I get everything I wished for. That wasn’t possible. My list was always too long.   I’m still a bit bummed that I never got the chemistry set I asked for 2 years running or the Game of Life (asked for that multiple years).  😉 Now that the JcPenney Christmas
