Sweet Saturday: Strawberry Tart

As I mentioned once, I am not a fan of chocolate; however, I am a lover of strawberries! Strawberries have been my favorite food since I was a little girl. They are luscious and delicious. Perfect on their own or sugared and poured over pound cake.  When I was pregnant with my youngest, Grace, I couldn’t get enough strawberries. I bought 2 pints of strawberries a week for most of the summer. I ate most of those strawberries all by myself. (Hmmm…maybe this is why she has red hair??)  That said, I’ve never been daring with strawberries. I stick to

Sweet Saturday: Blackberry Bread

One of my all-time favorite foods is the blackberry! The flavor is sweet and wonderful. The plump, dark purple berries hold an allure other berries lack, save the strawberry.  The thought of blackberries brings me back to summers visiting my grandparents’ farm and helping to pick the berries. The best part of picking them was sampling about a third of what I actually collected. Then, my Grandma Davis would make her blackberry cobbler. A sweet treat indeed!  I love these berries enough that I planted a blackberry bush in my yard about 3 or 4 years ago. This past summer

Sweet Saturday: Peanut Brittle

Since Thanksgiving came to an end, I’ve been busy planning what Christmas cookies and candies I will make this year. I love trying new recipes, but there is something about making what you grew up eating. When I was a child, my mom spent a lot of time in the kitchen before Christmas. Every year she would make my favorites: oatmeal raisin cookies, sugar cut out cookies, ice box cookies, divinity, and, of course, peanut brittle. To me, Christmas is not the same without at least one of those.  Now that I’m a mom, I want to bake and make

Sweet Saturday: Orange Cookies

My husband and I love cookies. They are a regular purchase for us at the grocery store. Recently, it occurred to me that we would probably save money if we made our own cookies. Now, we are making a concerted effort to bake cookies, each taking turns. Last week, DH baked chocolate chip cookies for him and Ginny. (I don’t eat chocolate chip cookies because I don’t really like chocolate.) This week was my turn. I decided to try a new recipe that I had long ago pinned on my Sweet Tastes board on Pinterest. The cookies were called Outrageously

Lemon Squares

One of my absolute favorite lemon desserts is the lemon square.  Eating a lemon square transports me back to college. During my junior and senior year, I was a Resident Assistant at my beloved KU at an all-women’s residence hall, GSP-Corbin. GSP (stands for Gertrude Sellars Pearson if you were curious) had their own food service. Every once in a while, they would serve lemon bars (or squares) for dessert. It was hard to stop myself from getting more than one. Heck, I had a hard time resisting more than two. I loved them so much that when I started

Mouthgasm!

The mouthgasmic dish (see my lovely hand model? Thanks, hone!) Fewer things make me happier than strawberries! They are my absolute favorite food! Usually, I pass up any recipes that involve strawberries. I generally love strawberries, the best, in one of the following forms: fresh, cut up & sugared, and in or on ice cream. There is no need to bake it in a pie or any such thing. (Although, I’m starting to consider doing just that some day soon.) A couple of months ago on Pinterest, I saw a recipe with strawberries that looked interesting so I pinned it.
